Northern Europe, England, Cambridge, ca. 1687 CE. A splendid and sizeable book entitled "The History of that Most Victorious Monarch Edward III King of England and France and Lord of Ireland and First Founder of the Most Noble Order of the Garter: Being a Full and Exact Account of the Life and Death of the said King, Together with That of His Most Renowned Son Edward, Prince of Wales and Aquitain Sirnamed the Black-Prince" and authored by Joshua Barnes, who was a Bachelor of Divinity and one of the Senior Fellows of Emmanuel College in Cambridge. Comprised of over 900 pages and fit with a brown leather cover, the curious codex was printed by John Hayes for the author in 1687. Size: 9.75" L x 2.875" W x 14.875" H (24.8 cm x 7.3 cm x 37.8 cm)
The book is embellished by 3 full page plates: the frontispiece which shows a portrait of King Charles III in royal regalia and holding a scepter and a globus cruciger and the 2 others displaying King Charles III - between pages 582 and 583 - and the Black Prince - between pages 706 and 707 - each in full armor with troops and French cities in the background. Additional illustrations of a coat of arms and family tree can be found on pages 685 and 755. All pages feature Early Modern English printed in black ink, while the title page has some words printed in red. Various watermarks can be found throughout, such as a coat of arms and a lion.
