Joan-Joseph Tharrats I Vidal (Spanish: Girona 1918 - Barcelona 2001). Color lithography with collage. Ca. 1950s. Numbered 12/90 in pencil on lower left. Signed in pencil on lower right. A wonderful mixed media work created via color lithography and collage, inspired by the solar system in a bold color palette of royal blue, cotton candy pink, golden yellow, vermilion red-orange, black, and white. The red orb, yellow crescent, and black triangular motifs are collage elements. From 1946 on, Joan-Joseph Tharrats used collage techniques. His employment of abstraction demonstrates early influences of Kandinsky. At the same time, Tharrats' involvement with the group of Dau al Set inspired strong influences of Magic Realism and Surrealism. Size: composition - 25.5" W x 16.875" H (64.8 cm x 42.9 cm); sheet - 29.75" W x 22" H (75.6 cm x 55.9 cm)
In 1947 Joan-Joseph Tharrats met the artists Joan Ponç, August Puig and the poet Joan Brossa; a bit later he also met Modest Cuixart and Antoni Tapies. Together the group founded "Dau al Set" as well as a magazine entitled with the same name. Tharrats wrote numerous articles and was the director until the group came to an end in 1956.
Tharrats had solo exhibitions at the Galerias Jardin, Barcelona (1950) and at the Sala Gaspar ("Collages" 1954; "Maculatures" 1955; "Joies i Escultures" 1956; and 1957, 1958, 1º960, 1963, 1967, 1973). Of international renown, his works were collected by the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Barcelona as well as in several important Museums of Modern Art.
