Jeff C. Legg (American, b. 1959). "Jan's Roses" oil on board. 2009. Signed and dated on lower left. One of the most beautiful still life paintings we have had the privilege of handling, Jeff C. Legg's "Jan's Roses" captures the beauty of flowers and objects many of us take for granted. The composition features two vases filled with pink roses positioned on a cloth-covered ledge, accompanied by a few fallen petals, purple grape clusters, and red plums. Mr. Legg's attention to various textures and details is astounding: the blue-on-white porcelain vessel on the left, the translucent glass vase on the right, the soft rose petals, and the smooth, shiny skins of the fruits. Then there is masterful way that Mr. Legg captures the light reflecting off both the organic fruits and flowers and the man-made vessels. This beautiful composition is set in an attractive frame that perfectly suits it. Size: 15.25" W x 11.5" H (38.7 cm x 29.2 cm); 23.5" W x 19.5" H (59.7 cm x 49.5 cm) framed
In a recent gallery statement, Legg poetically expressed his philosophy on light, "Making paintings is all about the light. Without light there is nothing. In my work as a painter I hope, in some small way, to illuminate eternal truths that every man who has 'an eye to see' cannot deny. Not to say all art must be narrative. Painting an object whether it be a humble well-used copper pot or a beautiful vase can be elevated to a higher level or even a spiritual perspective. The things we often take for granted are filled with worlds within worlds of beauty and nuance. The 'sublime' can be found in the smallest seemingly insignificant object or the grandest scene. It's all in how the artist eye sees it."
Born in Joplin, Missouri, Jeff Leg was recognized for his talents at the age of 12 when he apprenticed with a well-known regional artist and college art professor. Leg would later study at Atelier Lack and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Today, Mr. Legg resides in the northwest Arkansas Ozarks; he is a Master Signature member by the prestigious Oil Painters of America, and he has earned many coveted awards such as the Gold Medal at the OPA national exhibition. Jeff Legg's patrons include notable collectors such as astronaut Neil Armstrong, Hall of Fame baseball player George Brett, and former Kansas Governor Bill Graves. In addition, Mr. Legg's artworks have appeared on the cover of Southwest Art Magazine, Art of the West, and other reputable publications, and his work is exhibited in distinguished American galleries.
Jeff Legg's "Vines and Melon" (2009, oil on board) hammered for $6500 at Scottsdale Art Auction, 06 April 2013, Lot 341 - and his paintings can retail for considerably more, as much as $19,500.
