East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A nice pouch of a relative trapezoidal form made from densely scaled lizard skin with a thin upper periphery that leads inwards to a deep interior. The top fringe of the pouch is lined with 8 whale ivory pins secured via petite brass rivets, and strung through each pin is a length of braided textile cord with a wooden ball stopper. The ends of the cord are knotted within holes drilled through the body of a hand-carved wooden cicada netsuke bearing large eyes, folded wings, and smooth patina. Size (pouch): 4.5" W x 3" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm); (netsuke): 2.625" L x 1.3" W (6.7 cm x 3.3 cm)

Condition
Losses to some ivory pins along upper fringe of pouch with commensurate tearing to leather fringe. Minor abrasions to ball stopper. Light abrasions and a couple of stable hairline fissures to wooden cicada netsuke; cicada netsuke is intact and very good. Nice patina to netsuke. Pouch leather is still supple.
