East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful vintage wood tray with deep walls and rectangular basin that is lacquered and painted with maki-e, a shimmering gold leaf technique. Off center and overlapping the edge is a takamaki-e painted banner waving in the wind, in hues of red, brown, and gold. The rim of the tray is speckled with hiramaki-e style gold application. Hiramaki-e was a technique where metallic powders are applied directly on a smooth lacquered surface, covered with a thin coating of clear lacquer, then polished to smooth and make flush with the rest of the surface. Takamaki-e is similar, but the metallic lacquer is slightly raised from the surface - as exemplified by the banner on the center of this tray. The rest of the tray is a lustrous black, with shimmering golden flakes accenting the base of this lovely piece! Size: 19" L x 13.25" W (48.3 cm x 33.7 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.
