East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A gorgeous set of samurai armor (o-yoroi) in the karuta or kozan-do (card-like or plated) style. The lacquered iron helmet (kabuto) has side flaps (fukigaeshi) and a frontal moon-form ornament (maetate). The lacquered face mask (so-menpo) has bottom neck flaps (yodarekake), and a chainmail neck guard (aibiki no-o) is tied to the neck. The lacquered chest armor (dou) has front and back waist flaps (kusazuri) and layered shoulder panels (ko-sode) on top, and the front plate (tsurubashiri) is cinched with a textile belt (koshi no-o). Cloth and iron ring arm sleeves (kote) and leggings (sune-ate) cover the limbs of the samurai, and the entire ensemble rests atop an iron, brass, and wood armor transportation box (yoroi bitsu). A fantastic set from the late Edo period! Size (on armor box): 21" W x 53" H (53.3 cm x 134.6 cm).

Losses to several areas of chest plate, arms and leg guards, textile belt, helmet, and face mask commensurate with age as shown. Chipping to lacquered areas, fissures to some threads on belt, helmet, and armor pieces, with light staining in some areas, possible restoration to some threads, and stabilization and re-lacquering to some armor pieces. Great patina throughout.
