Jan Myers (American, Contemporary). "Road to Blackie's Place, 3" soft pastel, 1996. Signature followed by PSA (Pastel Society of America) and date at lower left. An enchanting, large-scale Southwest landscape, finely rendered in pastel by Jan Myers. The composition features a long, winding road, presumably the road to Blackie's Place as mentioned in the title, flanked by flourishing desert plants and golden fields, with a broad expanse of blue ridge mountains in the distance. All is delineated with Myers' keen eye for color and contrast. Myers travels throughout the Southwest to find such wondrous views. She works with soft pastels rather than oil pastels, because she enjoys the expressive nature of this medium. Size (sight view): 18" L x 29" W (45.7 cm x 73.7 cm) Size (frame): 24.125" L x 35.2" W (61.3 cm x 89.4 cm)
Jan Myers has stated that she does not consider herself to be an "outdoor painter". Indeed, rather than a strict plein air artist, Myers opts to enhance what nature presents to the world. In her words, "I'm not really an outdoor painter. Nature can be exciting – like a glorious sunset – but usually enhancement is needed. If I emphasize color and contrast, there's an excitement the viewer feels. If I'm going for a more tranquil, healing, spiritual sort of landscape, the color choices are much different. It's amazing how much I always need to simplify a scene, leaving a lot out, in order to convey a focused, powerful message; even if it is a peaceful message."
Jan Myers earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1978. She lives in both Colorado and New Mexico, and she has had numerous one-woman shows in Taos, Santa Fe, Tubac, and Denver. Myers is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and participates regularly in many juried national exhibits.
The medium of pastel originated in northern Italy during the 16th century and gained its greatest popularity during the 18th century when artists such as Jean-Baptiste Chardin, Francois Bouchet, and Rosalba Carriera created masterful pastel compositions. During the 19th century, some of the most famous artists of all time worked in pastel - including Mary Cassatt, William Merrit Chase, Edgar Degas, Pierre-August Renoir, Child Hassam, and Jean Francois Millet. Pastels continue to be coveted by artists, because they enable artists to capture scenes in the moment given the immediacy of the medium, and the colors are brilliantly saturated.
