Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque culture, ca. 500 CE. A gorgeous hand-built pottery vessel depicting a shamanic individual undergoing the spiritual process of transforming into a jaguar. The figure's head comprises the body of the vessel and rests upon a planar base, with a gaping mouth displaying several incised teeth, an arching nose, coffee-bean-shaped eyes with incised pupils, rectangular ears, and grooved eyebrow with a bowtie-shaped ornament resting in the middle. A simple headband wraps around the forehead and encircles the opening to the deep interior cavity. The vessel is adorned with vibrant pigments in hues of orange, green, and blue-green around the face and eyes, and black atop the teeth. A fabulous example with a sophisticated presentation and meticulous attention to detail. Size: 4.375" W x 5.125" H (11.1 cm x 13 cm).
