- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jama-Coaque, ca. 1 to 500 CE. This piece depicts a kneeling warrior holding a club in his right hand and a small vessel in his left hand. The figure is mold-made with applied decorations and beautiful blue-green and yellow pigmented jewelry and ornaments perhaps representing turquoise, jade, or emerald and gold respectively. Richly dressed and bedecked with adornments, he wears a headdress, luxurious ear ornaments, a large nose ring, a grand beaded pectoral, beaded bracelets on each wrist, anklets on each ankle, and a loin cloth with a long tie that falls behind him to connect with the integral platform below. Facing forward, his proud visage dominated by those wide-open, almond-shaped eyes, he represents an fierce warrior of the Jama Coaque culture. He stands upon a large integral plinth with small recessed area at rear to place some form of offering. Stunning! Size: 7" L x 5.5" W x 7.5" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm x 19 cm)
The ancient Jama Coaque culture is best known for its ceramic figurines and vessels, most likely created for ritualistic ceremonies. Jama Coaque figures like this example are typically more elaborately adorned and clothed than those of other coastal cultures during this period.
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000.
