Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A hollow-built pottery female figure of a dignified form that stands atop a pair of broad feet. The highly burnished woman presents wearing a knee-length skirt beneath bared breasts, turquoise-hued wrist bangles and pectoral collar, and a necklace with a cylindrical pendant hanging to the middle of her chest. Her rounded face bears semicircular eyes, a petite nose with a broad nose ornament, tab-shaped ears, and a petite chin, all beneath a sizable headdress bearing a single lappet and a panel of textured prongs.
The Jama Coaque culture, named for the towns of Jama and Coaque of the Pacific coast of Ecuador, is known for its pottery, especially large human-shaped molded statues adorned with appliques and painted with rich pigments. Dress and ornament were identifiers of clans and ethnic groups and markers of rank among many ancient American peoples. Information encoded in elements of clothing and jewelry would have been understood by the members of those groups.
