Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Sebastian type, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hollow-built pottery effigy figure depicting an elderly woman with fine burnishing grooves covering her entire corpus. The dignified woman presents in a standing pose and wears an ankle-length skirt while holding both arms to the sides of her overflowing abdomen. Her rigid pose is furthered by her pendulous breasts and narrow shoulders, and her stocky neck is adorned with a necklace bearing a pair of 'beads' and a slender columnar pendant. Her elongated head is detailed with puffy eye lids, rounded cheek bones above slightly recessed cheeks, a prominent chin beneath two rows of bared teeth, tall ears with shell-style earrings, and a massive forehead surmounted by a lobed coiffure. An intriguing example of naturalistically styled figurative artistry from ancient Jalisco. Size: 9.4" W x 24.8" H (23.9 cm x 63 cm)

Condition
Professionally repaired from multiple pieces with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines that does not detract from the overall presentation; chipping to material beneath both feet for balance and stabilization. Abrasions and nicks to feet, body, face, top of head, and verso, with fading to scattered areas of original pigment, and light encrustations within interior cavity and some recessed exterior areas. Nice preservation to facial details and original pigment throughout.
