Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fierce terracotta warrior figure, armed with a large club in his right hand and a celt in his left hand, with shoulder pellets liberally applied to his broad frame, and wearing a loin cloth. His characteristically elongated head is adorned with an elaborate headdress comprised of crossed headbands and a celt-shaped ornament or possibly coiffure, his visage presenting a stern countenance (this guy means business), with well-delineated facial features including coffee bean eyes, a boldly projecting nose, elongated ears perforated for the insertion of ornaments, and an open toothy grimace. Standing with legs spread apart, feet firmly planted on the ground, leaning forward as he is carrying what appears to be flayed animal on his back. Clearly an elite, highly decorated, and fearsome warrior. Size: 8.75" W x 10.375" H (22.2 cm x 26.4 cm)
This figure would have stood guard in a shaft tomb, a burial method unique to the ancients of West Mexico; some shafts could be over 50 feet long, and several tombs containing human remains would branch off of the shaft. Figures like this fellow were placed facing outward around the edges of the tomb as if in conversation with or to provide for the human remains within; some scholars have theorized that this symbolically depicted a continuum between the worlds of the living and the dead, with communication occurring between them.
