Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Gray Type, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A remarkable handmade pottery figure seated with his legs bent before him. Leaning forward to rest his folded arms on his knees, the ancient figure gently arches his back and raises his square shoulders, conveying the pensive appearance of a thinker or dreamer. Skillfully rendered with attention to detail, each of his fingers and toes are clearly delineated. A hemispherical coiffure boasting three horizontal bands and two spherical adornments crowns his head. His stylized visage displays typical Jalisco characteristics, such as a prominent chin, a sharp nose, almond-shaped eyes, and a full-lipped mouth, positioned slightly ajar to show a row of teeth. Both nude and heavily adorned, the curious figure is fitted with a sizable septum ornament and several earrings. The entirety of the figure is coated in an impressively preserved pigment of creamy peach. Size: 5" W x 10.875" H (12.7 cm x 27.6 cm)

Repaired from several pieces with break lines still visible in some areas. Two petite apertures along break line and small chip to proper left ear. A few minor areas have been restored using new material. Some light abrasions as shown. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining glaze and lovely manganese deposits.
