Italy, Italic Civilization, ca. 4th and 3rd Centuries BCE. A rare and quite wonderful bronze helmet of the Montefortino type, from the period between the fall of the Etruscans and the rise of the Roman empire. Round bowl-shaped undecorated helmet with spooled knob at crest, small flared neck-guard at rear, and a slightly everted rim. At one time this helmet had ear-guards, now missing, but original hinges are still present. Size: 10" L x 8.5" W x 7" H (25.4 cm x 21.6 cm x 17.8 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Montefortino helmets are generally characterized by a conical or round shape with a raised central knob, and a protruding neck guard as well as cheek plates to protect the sides of the head. Other common features include a "rope"-type pattern around the edge, and "pinecone"-type patterning on the crest knob. Note that the classifications are those used by archaeologists, rather than Celts or Romans, who, if they did distinguish among these types, have left no known record of the terms they used.

Condition
Repaired with section to one side restored, most likely the result of a massive blow to the wearer. Surface lightly cratered and original ear guards missing. A fine example of the type.
