Iran, Caspian Sea region, middle of 2nd / beginning of first millennia BCE. A large and fine pottery fertility goddess of a type found throughout much of the ancient Central Asian world. Sometimes referred to as a "steatopygous" idol. This relates to the level of "tissue" on the thighs and buttocks. Rounded head squared at forehead, incised eyes, hands on waist, small breasts and incised decorations on belly, legs, buttocks and back. She has a long braid of hair down her back, perforated ears, wearing a decorated circular crown. Size: 3.375" W x 7.5" H (8.6 cm x 19 cm)
Idols like this were offerings to the gods asking for help in conceiving children. They were often left in temples or kept in their homes.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
