Ancient Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harrapan/Mohenjo Daro, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A tall polychrome vessel that rests on a flat base and rises to a long body, rounded shoulders, and the wide rim. The exterior of the vessel is decorated with many geometric and zoomorphic patterns in black, brown, and red pigments on a tan ground. The decoration is divided into three main registers covered in zoomorphic forms: antelope, ibex, bulls, and birds. Pointed trees and swirly lines, and other abstract shapes adorn these sections as well. The registers are separated by encircling lines, or smaller rows of ibex. The painted details and variety of forms is remarkable, and polychrome pottery is a rare find from the Indus Valley! Size: 8.28" W x 13.8" H (21 cm x 35.1 cm)
The Indus Valley Civilization covered a wide geographic region, from northeast Afghanistan to Pakistan and northwest India, in the basin of the Indus River; key associated sites are the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro a UNESCO World Heritage site. The people that settled in this area formed some of the earliest known cities. The fertile soil from the Indus River created the ideal place to settle and form a society based on agriculture and change from nomads to farmers facilitated the development of writing and a government system. It is believed that they traded goods with Mesopotamia, Egypt, and other areas of the Persian Gulf, and this contact is evidenced by cross cultural influences in pottery development.
