Southeast Asia, Indochina region, ca. 20th century CE. A cast brass statue of Budai (also known as Budai), the Maitreya Buddha, depicted in a happy yet serene pose. Often referred to as the "Laughing Buddha," Budai is characterized by his round belly, a symbol of contentment and abundance. In the right hand, he holds a sycee ingot, representing wealth, while his left hand grasps a money pouch, both symbols of prosperity. This figure is also associated with Phra Sankachai, a Thai deity linked to joy and fortune. The statue is seated upon a tiered pedestal adorned with decorative elements reminiscent of Southeastern Buddhist statuary, blending regional artistic influences.
