South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A striking gilt copper alloy sculpture of the Buddha, known as Shakyamuni Buddha or Siddhartha Gautama, the crown prince of the Shakya Kingdom, on a pedestal adorned with relief imagery of worshipers at a shrine. As evident by his gaunt face and emaciated body, this depiction shows Shakyamuni during the 49 day fast which he partook in before attaining enlightenment. The vivid portrayal painstakingly details his rib cage and clavicle with sinuous blood vessels showing through his flesh, almost appearing flayed, while gilt drapery hangs from his elbows, cascading in puddles of fabric across his legs, which are crossed in dhyanasana or lotus position, while his hands are folded in the dhyana mudra of meditation across his lap. In contrast to his body, his visage presents a tranquil and composed expression with sunken, downcast eyes beneath a prominent unibrow, sharp cheek bones, a pointed nose, a gentle smile, and an angular jawline and chin lined by a short beard. Size: 9.5" L x 13" W x 18" H (24.1 cm x 33 cm x 45.7 cm)

The Emaciated Buddha is a depiction of Siddhartha Gautama during his period of extreme asceticism before attaining enlightenment. After renouncing his royal life, he sought spiritual awakening through severe self-mortification, believing that extreme fasting and physical deprivation would lead to liberation. This phase is often represented in artwork showing him with a gaunt, skeletal frame, sunken eyes, and protruding ribs, symbolizing his intense suffering and dedication. However, after realizing that such extreme practices did not lead to enlightenment, he abandoned asceticism and adopted the Middle Way - a balanced approach between indulgence and self-denial. This realization ultimately led him to attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, shaping the core teachings of Buddhism. The Emaciated Buddha serves as a powerful reminder of the limitations of extreme asceticism and the importance of balance on the path to spiritual awakening.

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired via Abell Auction Company, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-property from the estate of Professor Harry Stone, Brentwood, California, USA; ex-I.M.
