South Asia, eastern India, Bengal, Chandraketugarh, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. A remarkable mold-made pottery jar presenting an elegant form composed of a bulbous body, a sloped shoulder, a narrow neck, and a dramatically flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Boasting a hue of deep grey, the ancient vessel features an elaborate program. The piece is dominated by its largest register which features a row of dozens of bare-breasted women, all wearing translucent lungis, extravagant coiffures, and many jeweled adornments. All standing contrapposto, each of the lovely women are positioned in diverse poses as though dancing, while 5 hold spears. Though the identity of these women is unknown, their form is later associated with Durga, the demon-fighting form of the Hindu mother goddess, Parvati. Intricately detailed registers of lotus flowers flank central register, accompanied by rope-like and star motifs, and a fine abstract design of horizontal striations. Size: 6.875" in diameter x 7.75" H (17.5 cm x 19.7 cm)
