Ancient Near East, Anatolian, 5th to 4th millennium BCE. An incredibly large and weighty Anatolian annular idol, hand-carved from a single piece of marble in an impressive ring form from which an integral hemispheric/elliptical "head" with openwork "eyes" arises. One can appreciate the immense skill required to sculpt an object such as this, with near perfect symmetry and balance, and of such a grand scale. Please note that since metallurgy was still in its embryonic stages during this period, stone sculptors were limited to tools made from obsidian or emery when carving and modeling their works. Given this, the harmonious balance of this piece is all the more impressive. While white marble Anatolian idols were often highly schematic in nature; this specimen is quite unusual for its monumental character! Although we know of idols of similar form from Magna Graecia, the Balkans and Western Anatolia, their sizes rarely exceed four or five inches. Size: 13.625" L x 11" W (34.6 cm x 27.9 cm); 15.375" H (39.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Votive idols are known in a variety of fascinating forms throughout the pre-literate ancient world. Given the existence of this truly abstract annular idol figure as well as others, i.e. the feminine so-called "Venus" figures, we know that people in the past did not feel constrained by naturalism. While archaeologists and art historians have suggested that they represent or symbolize the human figure - albeit quite stylized - this understanding is still being disputed. Irregardless, their anthropomorphic nature is difficult to deny.
