Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. A charming pottery ritual watering vessel known as a paccha in the form of a seated figure carrying a llama. Depicted nude, the stylized figure displays an egg-shaped body and attenuated limbs as he bends his legs at each side and balances the animal atop sloped shoulders, grasping its legs with his hands. His large head presents an expressive countenance suggestive of ceremonial drug intoxication with wide, ovoid eyes, a naturalistic nose, prominent nasolabial folds, and an open mouth exposing gritted teeth, all flanked by a petite pair of ears. The llama's lengthy body stretches across the figure's upper back, its sizeable head protruding from one side, exhibiting cupped ears, bulging eyes, an elongated snout, delineated nostrils, and a long tongue hanging from its open mouth. A broad headdress crowns the figure's head, opening to an annular rim at the top that leads to the hollow interior of the vessel. Size: 4.6" W x 7.5" H (11.7 cm x 19 cm)
The figure is seated atop a discoid plinth that serves as the vessel's base with a brief, conical spout extending outward just below his feet. Red and black pigments adorn the orange terracotta ground, adding decorative details throughout the piece.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
