Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dazzling jar, mold-blown from brilliant yellow glass with a spherical body, rounded shoulders, a corseted neck, and a wide flared rim, all sitting upon a slightly concave base. The body is vertically lined with integral, chocolate-brown ribs as rigaree of the same color zigzags between the rim and shoulder. Across most of the surface is a layer of lustrous rainbow as well as silvery iridescence that formed as the glass aged and accentuates its beautiful form. Collection labels on base. Small area of loss to trailing. Rough pontil scar on base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
