East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful and impressively large polychrome pottery vessel, the piriform body painted in black on a red ground, featuring two wide registers of quadrilateral and diamond shaped motifs that are further adorned by dense lattice-work and separated by a linear bands. The cylindrical neck projects upwards to a flared rim and is adorned by a black stylized geometric motifs against a red ground as well, and a pair of applied loop handles are situated equidistantly just above the midline of the body. The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery.

Condition
Repaired from about 8 to 10 pieces with some visible adhesive over the break lines. Chips to rim. Expected surface wear with abraded areas, nicks, chips, scuffs, and normal fading to pigmentation. Still, the decorative program is discernible and quite nice.
