Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A marvelous and massive blackware jar presenting with a rotund body and the relief of an anthropomorphic visage with extending arms. Featured on the neck of the vessel, the expressive face displays ovoid eyes, arched brows, a bulbous nose, prominent cheeks, and full lips held slightly open to display gritted teeth. A pair of rounded ears flank the head, perhaps serving as petite lug handles, while attenuated arms stretch out onto the jar's shoulder, culminating in petite armbands and articulated hands. A raised band encircles the forehead, creating the illusion of a headdress with a chinstrap out of the rim of the vessel. The face is further embellished by elevated lines that extend from the eyes and encircle the mouth. The jar itself possesses an ovoid body with a sloped shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a flared spout, all sitting upon a rounded base. Size: 12.8" Diameter x 19" H (32.5 cm x 48.3 cm)
