Northwestern Europe to British Isles, Viking, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. One of the finest Viking iron swords we have had the pleasure of offering! Iron long sword, Oakeshott type X, the blade doubled edged with wide fuller to both face and obverse surfaces, which runs almost the entire length of the blade. Blade has a typical broad rounded point and is noticeably broad - 48mm at origin. In plan the cross guard is nearly rectilinear, with squared terminals, pommel in typical domed shape attached with flattened flange at crown. Each side of the blade is decorated - one side with series of runic text which is partially obscured from age and wear. The opposite side is decorated with three high-karat gold inlays in cross inside circle design. Size: 35" L x 5.75" W (88.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
Tested for metal analysis and authenticity by Dr. Gerry McDonald at Gerry McDonald Archaeometals, Wales and Artemis Testing Labs, Louisville, Colorado. Results will be provided to purchaser, but confirms age of the metal and manufacturing technique is consistent with swords from the Viking era. Comes with custom magnetic wall mount.
