Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. This large, carved volcanic basalt hacha was crafted through a meticulous process of pecking the stone (evident at the rear) and polishing with stones and sand. This example is shaped as a stylized bird of prey, featuring a curved beak, three rows of feathers, a rounded chest, and feet curled beneath. Hachas were ceremonial objects associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame, likely worn in rituals or used as ballcourt markers. The name "hacha" (Spanish for "axe") reflects an early belief that they were axe-heads, though they were not part of players' equipment. Size: 6.5" L x 3.25" W x 11.5" H (16.5 cm x 8.3 cm x 29.2 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex Harold Thomas estate passed to son Everett Thomas by decent, 1983. Published in Gigi Vivian Collection, 2018
