Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. In a word - breathtaking! Important and rare gold and lapis headdress and earspools. Starting at the top, golden feather with flared top section and insertion tang above a ring of 7 gold circular elements, each with recessed outer ring set with smaller flat gold ring and then another smaller gold dangler. Earspools comprised of gold spools with flared end-piece in which a large lapis (more accurately sodalite, one of the primary elements of lapis) in deep blue/purple. Exquisitely mounted and the highlight of any collection. Size of plume: 7.5" H (19 cm); entire display: 21.75" H (55.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The gold of each element has been XRF'd and shows a gold content ranging between a high of 91.5% to a low of 59%. Ancient Chavin gold was worked from gold nuggets found in high elevation rivers and hand hammered to create such masterworks. It is not unusual to find varied mixes of gold, silver and copper in such works.
