Byzantium, Late Byzantine, ca. 12th century CE. A fine lapis lazuli plaque, skillfully carved with an image of Jesus Christ as Pantocrator holding an open Gospel book in His left hand and making a gesture of benediction with his right hand, his fingers arranged to form the initials of His monogram IC XC , in order to bless the faithful. Notice the remarkable technique, in particular the elegant delineations of Christ's nimbus, the folds of his robe, his wide-eyed all knowing visage, the Gospel, and the initials of Christ, IC XC, flanking His head. Of note is the wonderful contrast between the more modelled head and hands of Christ - demonstrating the artist's Greco-Roman heritage - as compared to the schematic, linear folds of his garment. The most accepted translation of Pantocrator is "Almighty" or "All Powerful" and this visage of Jesus certainly projects His omnipotence. Expertly carved on the face of a beautiful piece of coveted lapis lazuli possessing brilliant cobalt blue hues, it is an exceedingly rare devotional object. This iconic depiction resounded throughout the Byzantine world - in such monumental forms as the dome mosaic of the Church of the Dormition in Daphne, Greece (ca. 1090 to 1100) and the apse mosaic of the cathedral at Monreale (Sicily) Italy (ca. 1180 to 1190), as well as more intimately scaled icons including "Christ as Savior of Souls" icon from Saint Clement, Ohrid, Macedonia (early 14th century) - and it continues to be central iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church today.
