Ancient Europe, Spain, Iberian Peninsula, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. An abstract anthropomorphic male figure, standing nude atop fused legs with a central vertical recession down the middle and a small tenon protruding from beneath. His erect posture is presented via his straightened back, and he holds slender arms outwards with curled fingers and outward-facing thumbs. Despite the minimalist form of the rest of the body, his limbs are curved and display a naturalistic attention to musculature detailing. Petite almond eyes, a triangular nose, pursed lips, and ovoid ears comprise his visage all beneath a domed brow. The figure is covered in lustrous layers of green and brown patina. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.425" W x 4.8" H (3.6 cm x 12.2 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Iberian statuette examples like this would have been placed in a sanctuary or temple - a change that occurred around the beginning of the later Iberian period, as prior to that votive human figures were placed into burials. This indicates a shift in belief systems, perhaps to a religious understanding where humans interacted directly with the gods rather than going through an intermediary like a priest. Bronze figures are particularly associated with the sanctuaries at Despenaperros and El Cerro de los Santos, while other sites had stone figures. Iberian figures from this period are always either very clearly male or female.
