North America, ca. millions of years ago. This is a massive smoky quartz crystal with a natural point and an aquamarine prism protruding from the matrix, atop feldspar near the base. This is a magical example of geology - the quartz is a tall pillar with an ombre smoky gray tip that lightens to an opaque white near the base. The aquamarine crystal is nestled into the side of the quartz matrix, supported by the milky white feldspar. Aquamarine is blue variety in the beryl family, that includes emeralds, and noted for the natural hexagonal profile, that is partially exemplified by this lovely piece. The termination points, coloration, and size, of this quartz with the aquamarine inclusion, make this mineral an overall gorgeous display piece to add to any collection. Size: 13" L x 4" W (33 cm x 10.2 cm); weight: 4.17 kg (9.2 lb.)
Besides the impressive size of this incredible crystal, each mineral carries supposed energies. In Roman times, aquamarine was thought in antiquity to be a symbol of youth and joy, and the treasure of mermaids, and sailors carried the stone on voyages for protection. Quartz was a prized material due to its translucency and refractory properties. Pliny the Elder believed that quartz was fossilized ice, permanently frozen into stones, a belief that persisted into the 17th century!
