Western Asia, Iran/Persia, ca. 11th century CE. A massive pottery vessel painted with geometric and zoomorphic shapes in a deep brown or black pigment. The vessel rests on a flat base and the body rises upward to a rounded shoulder with flanking handles, shaped by two twisted coils with small central tabs. The shoulder then narrows to a neck and flared spout. A painted register encircles the shoulder with a register on the neck and below the rim. The painted designs comprise of stylized swirls, crisscrossing checker lines, and swastikas. Large abstract birds are framed by these geometric shapes along the shoulder register and below the rim, and the interior of the mouth has several more swastika shapes and horizontal lines. This pottery is an impressive storage vessel that may have served a domestic purpose! Size: 12.26" W x 18.5" H (31.1 cm x 47 cm)
The swastika symbol originally came from central Asia and had roots in Zoroastrianism, a religion centered upon the idea of two forces, one supreme good deity, and a chaotic and evil deity or demon. The right facing or clockwise swastika is a solar symbol of the passage of time. The four arms represent the continuous circular motion of the sun, rising in the east and setting in west.
