Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A fabulous and sizeable polychrome bowl, presenting two outstanding representations of the Masked Mythical Being (Anthropomorphic Mythical Being) finely painted on both sides in a wide variety of colors - red, orange, tan, grey, black, and white hues. Both creatures are depicted with a characteristic feline head adorned by a trophy head adorned headband, and catching a trophy head in his grop. His mask is shown with lateral elements in the form of cat whiskers which also appear to be stylized trophy heads. His ears are trophy heads, and he also dons an impressive necklace or chin strap presenting fret marks that may represent the eyes of several trophy heads. Within the spiked bodies are even more trophy heads. While the Nazca did not leave written records explaining this mythical being, several appear to be associated with trophy heads and others with agricultural functions. A wonderful example! Size: 10.5" in diameter x 4.375" H (26.7 cm x 11.1 cm)
Disembodied "trophy" heads were very popular motifs in Nazca artwork. Archaeological evidence shows that these stylized depictions were based on real rituals - over one hundred mummified trophy heads have been found from Nazca excavations, almost all with a puncture to the front of the skull for suspension. Archaeologists specializing in this culture continue to argue over the significance of these heads in Nazca culture. Were these intended to represent warriors fallen in battle? The idea of taking the power of enemies by assuming ownership of a crucial part of their bodies? A remembrance of deceased relatives? The questions remain and are so intriguing.
