Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An incredible set of hand-built pottery figures, a man and a woman, each of titanic size when compared to typical figures from this region. Both figures present nude and standing atop huge feet with minimal arches. The woman holds a petite bowl in her left hand and exhibits sizable breasts, a slightly distended abdomen, and gentle, generously-lidded eyes. Conversely, the male figure holds both arms up - with shield and club brandished in raised hands - in a defensive manner, perhaps protecting the entrance to a shaft tomb. Each anthropomorphic effigy bears remains of yellow and white pigment atop the russet-hued buffware that indicates just how vibrant the hues were when originally created. Size of largest (male): 10" L x 14" W x 26.875" H (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm x 68.3 cm); (female): 8" L x 15.5" W x 25.5" H (20.3 cm x 39.4 cm x 64.8 cm)
Clay figures like this pair are the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico. They made no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like these, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls. A large effigy figures such as these 2 would most likely have flanked the entrance to a tomb in a way that archaeologists have interpreted as guarding. Some scholars have connected these dynamic sculptures of the living as a strong contrast to the skeletal remains whose space they shared, as if they mediated between the living and the dead.

Condition
Repair to each figure with restoration along some break lines, with small areas of loss, and adhesive residue along unrestored break lines. Fading and chipping to surface pigment, light earthen deposits, and a few stable fissures, otherwise in great condition. Incredible size and presentation.
