Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 BCE to 600 CE. An impressive copper rattle/bell in the form of an enormous tumi, a ceremonial knife, which may have also functioned as piece of protective armor for a warrior. The thick sheet of copper is folded over the top, the surface of both sides are repousse shaped to hold the clapper balls- the tear drop shape may symbolize the ullucus root vegetable. The folded top creates several suspension loops that enabled this to be suspended from clothing or worn on a belt. The beautiful and thick turquoise patina is impressed with textured patterns from a woven cloth suggesting that this piece was placed atop or wrapped in a textile fabric as a funerary offering to accompany an elite deceased to the afterlife. Size: 10.5" W x 14" H (26.7 cm x 35.6 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.
For a similar example, please see the Larco Museum (Museo Larco) collection, catalog code number: ML100791. According to their translated description: "The Mochica warriors wore an ornament on the lower part of their back as part of their clothing. In the Mochica scenes we can see it covering the coccyx area of ??the warriors, which is why we call it "coxal protector." Its shape is similar to that of the ceremonial knife. The blade is sharp and shows traces of use, indicating that it could have been used to make cuts. At the top of the ornament is a rattle. In it, ulluchus have been represented, fruits associated with sacrifice and fertility rituals. The warrior clothing also included rattles that hung from the waist, with various designs. Coxal protectors of gilt copper, silver copper, and copper; gilt copper rattles."
