Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan/Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 BCE. A stunning example of some of the earliest decorated pottery from Central Asia - an ample, finely built and decorated vessel with a rounded bulbous body that rises to an elegantly rolled rim and dramatically narrows at the lower end toward a circular, flat foot. The surface is elegantly adorned with a chocolate brown on buff decorative/iconographic program featuring four pictorial registers separated by bands of four fineline striations. The upper three registers present aquatic scenes with numerous swimming fish - each one meticulously delineated with scales, fins, and eyes - as well as bubbles to provide a sense of marine life, while the lowest register is adorned with undulating fine lines to represent wavy waters. A wonderful example! Size: 10.125" in diameter x 12.375" H (25.7 cm x 31.4 cm)
