East Asia, China, Wu region, late Han Dynasty to early Southern and Northern Dynasties, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A tall mold-made pottery laborer or farmer figure, one of the largest examples of a funerary attendant that we have ever had in house! In one hand is a slender tool (appearing to be a version of the Chinese bronze dagger/sword with ringed pommel, with another suspended on his belt) and the other hand is outstretched and may have wielded a spade or shovel, based on similar examples in museum collections. The Han Dynasty was a period of wealth and stability for China, and the burial places of their rulers reflected this prosperity; they held hundreds and sometimes thousands of miniature terracotta figures who reflected the daily life of the emperor's court, including figures like this one, and warriors clad in full armor, servants, eunuchs, animals, and models of important buildings like granaries. The creation of all these pottery figures spawned a huge industry and the remains of workshops have been found near some of the burial mounds. Size: 14" L x 8.5" W x 42" H (35.6 cm x 21.6 cm x 106.7 cm); 62" H (157.5 cm) on included custom stand.
