Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes (Paquime) culture, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of massive size with a round but stable base, a gently rounded carination emanating laterally from the midsection, a sloped shoulder, and a thick, flared rim on top. Adorned with red and black pigments atop the sandy beige ground, the vessel exhibits a series of intricate linear motifs with serrated edges, concentric stripes, and a pair of abstract, serpentine creatures with arrowhead-shaped heads, their eyes dripping from the bottoms. The finest Casas Grandes polychromes are usually Ramos Polychrome. The skill, standardization, and iconographic content show that vessels such as this example were more developed than folk art forms. Size: 18" Diameter x 16" H (45.7 cm x 40.6 cm)
The Casas Grandes (or Chihuahua) culture has always been the best known of the prehistoric cultures of northwest Mexico. International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes - also known as Paquime.
