Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Calima, Early Horizon period, ca. 0 to 100 CE. An extremely large gold disk comprised of 82% gold (equivalent to just under 20K) that would have been worn by a Lord King as a symbol of power. The convex ornament representing the sun presents a sizeable central orb surrounded by an attractive set back border. This piece would have been attached to a royal garment or suspended from the neck. Various Pre-Columbian ceramic figures representing lords depict these elite figures wearing similar sun disks to symbolize their origins as divine entities who descended from the Sun. This pectoral is certainly fit for a royal elite of the Calima river valley of southwest ancient Colombia where abundant gold deposits made a goldworking tradition possible for at least 2,000 years! Two perforations for suspension or attachment. Size: 6" in diameter (15.2 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 70.3 grams. Precious metal quality: 82% gold (equivalent to just under 20K).
Interestingly, centuries later when Christopher Columbus was sailing along the coast of the Americas, he and his team traded with the indigenous for what they called "mirrors of gold". These were worn around the natives' necks. Although there are no recorded descriptions of these objects, it is possibly that they looked similar to this type, as forms and styles spread throughout the Pre-Columbian world.
