East Asia, China, Nantan, Nandan County, witnessed ca. 1516 CE. This is a massive 5.9 kg (13.2 lb.) octahedrite meteorite slab, and totally out of this world - as it was a witnessed fall from outer space! This meteorite was observed in 1516 CE; and a poetic description was recorded: "During summertime in May of Jiajing 11th year, stars fell from the northwest direction, five to six-fold long, waving like snakes and dragons. They were as bright as lightning and disappeared in seconds." This slab is polished and shows off the interesting interlacing banding and ribboning known as Widmanstatten patterns or Thomson structures and are naturally occurring fine layers of material. The shimmering piece is made of an iron-nickel alloy is known as kamacite; a 90% to 95% iron with a 5% to 10% nickel content. Kamacite is only found on earth via meteorites! This is a gorgeous display piece that comes with a wooden stand. Size: 11.75" L x 0.35" W x 20" H (29.8 cm x 0.9 cm x 50.8 cm); weight: 5987.419 grams.
Observed falls are a rare event, less than 1% of meteorites collected were actually witnessed falling to earth - most "found" meteorites are discovered years later after the event. Although known for centuries the strewn field of the Nantan meteorite lay mostly untouched. In 1958, the midst of the Chinese industrial revolution, an iron shortage sparked the collection of these meteorite fragments for steel production - fortunately the nickel content and melting point were too high, and these pieces were not destroyed for the sake of industry!
