Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Huari / Wari, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. An impressively hand-carved wooden textile implement of an elongated and slender form, tapered at one end and adorned with a double-sided zoomorphic/anthropomorphic finial at the other featuring an openwork triangular motif, possibly depicting a bird or a face, below two heads connected by a spiked arch filled with seven target shapes. Each of the two heads is delineated with large lidded eyes, wide noses, prominent nasolabial folds, full lips, and tall pointed ears, indicating they may be any of a variety of creatures or objects, such as wild cats, coyotes, llamas, masked faces, or decapitated heads. This polished tool would have been used for weaving textiles, one the most valuable creation of the Huari culture. A beautiful utilitarian example from ancient Peru! Size: 2.5" L x 2.5" W (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm); 18.75" H (47.6 cm) on included custom stand.
The Huari culture began to develop during the late Moche era. The Huari culture, centered on a capital to the south of Moche territory in the central highlands of Peru, rose as the Moche culture fell apart and before the Chimu asserted themselves on the north coast. They had extensive contact with other regions in the Andes, most notably the Tiahuanaco in present-day Bolivia, and the Nazca and the Pachacamac on the south and central coast of Peru. Hence there is no homogenous Huari style. Instead we see a wide range of visual expressions in their wood carvings and ceramics.
Two implements of similar form, but with different finials, can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession numbers 1989.26.2 and 1989.26.1.
