Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari), ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A fabulous mold-formed pottery vessel in the form of a shamanic figure seated atop crossed legs above the flat base. The emaciated figure presents with delineated ribs and shoulder blades, leans slightly to one side while holding a small item in one open palm, and has a pierced suspension lug situated above the protruding spinal column. Gaunt eyes and incised cheek tattoos emphasize the near-skeletal nature of the figure and form the pensive visage along with tab-shaped ears, thin lips above a bottom lip ornament, and an aquiline nose with an accompanying nose ring, all beneath a conical headdress decorated with linear and stippled motifs in red and black pigment atop a cream-hued ground. Size: 2.8" W x 5.625" H (7.1 cm x 14.3 cm).
