Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A large cottonwood kachina doll depicting Kokopelli disguised as the female counterpart Kokopelli Mana. The figure wears a black mask with a white stripe down the center, a conical striped beak, and large red feathered side hair whorls, signifying maiden status. But, the upper garment is carved from wood, while the lower skirt is made of felt - one corner playfully lifted to reveal a prominent phallus with pubic hair, a humorous nod to Kokopelli's role as both a fertility symbol and a mischievous trickster. This unexpected detail cleverly reinforces the dual nature of the character, blurring the lines between gender roles in a way that is both comical and symbolic. Signed in pen on the felt base: "W. HOWATO." This piece may be an early carving by Howato, as his later works are known for their intentionally aged and antique aesthetic. A heishi shell and turquoise stone necklace adorns the neck, adding an element of traditional ornamentation. Size: 7" W x 19" H (17.8 cm x 48.3 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005
