Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A large, early, exceedingly rare, and important mosaic from the Hellenistic period of Greek history. Once part of a large floor, likely in a palatial villa, temple, or shrine, it is composed of thousands of mostly round-cut "pebbles" in hues of dark brown, tan, and off-white. The central scene shows two maidens in profile, each holding a large lyre. Their hair is swept back in long rows and bound at the rear with a beaded tie. The women are set against a dark brown background and encircled in a Greek wave pattern with acanthus leaves in each corner. The top border is decorated with a continuous swastika and window-pane band. Size: 59" W x 72.875" H (149.9 cm x 185.1 cm)
Mosaics from the Greek period are extremely rare and do not often come up for auction.
