Ancient Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd century BCE. A finely carved 3/4 round marble head of a female, perhaps a deity such as Aphrodite, but possibly a more pedestrian portrayal as the new international culture of the Hellenistic era led to a wide range of subject matter, depicted with elegantly carved facial features including deeply set eyes, a straight nose, and pursed full lips upon naturalistically rendered facial planes, with a wavy, perhaps plaited coiffure. Breathtaking for its veristic and even emotive visage, as was characteristic of the Hellenistic period. The arts prospered during the Hellenistic period when kings took pride in being patrons of the arts and commissioned public art as well as private luxury pieces to demonstrate their elite taste and wealth. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hellenistic milieu was that artists were commissioned to portray rather unorthodox subjects, including working class maidens, the elderly, children, and ethnic phenotypes; this example most likely depicts either a deity or a lovely maiden. A jaw-dropping piece from this era of Aristotle, Menander, and Euclid! Custom stone stand. Size: 5.5" W x 7.5" H (14 cm x 19 cm), 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on custom stone stand.
