Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 2nd century BCE. Crafted in the form of a bull, this opulent marble fountain head embodies the era's fascination with lifelike naturalism and expressive detail. The bull's face is rendered with skillful realism, featuring deeply carved eyes, a robust snout, and pronounced, curved horns. Designed for use in a fountain, water would have flowed from the bull’s mouth, making it a dynamic element in ancient Greek gardens or public spaces, symbolizing strength, vitality, and fertility. Size: 16.25" L x 15" W x 17.75" H (41.3 cm x 38.1 cm x 45.1 cm)
In Hellenistic Greece, bull imagery was imbued with symbolic resonance, often associated with fertility, power, and the god Dionysus. This fountain head would have served both as a decorative feature and as a symbol of natural abundance, reflecting the Hellenistic appreciation for both beauty and symbolic depth in public and private art.
