Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. This beautiful high-quality gold lunula, or crescent-shaped pendant, is in choice condition, with an intact suspension loop that allows it to be threaded on a cord for wearing. Made from a 89.53% to 90.66% gold sheet (equivalent to 21K+), the pendant is adorned with delicate filigree wires that scroll and twist like rope and plant tendrils. The term "lunula" comes from the Latin word lunula, meaning "little moon," and these pendants were popular adornments in ancient Greece and Rome, often crafted in gold or silver. Their shape symbolizes the moon and was associated with lunar deities such as Artemis (Diana) and Selene (Luna), embodying femininity, fertility, and protection. Size: 1.125" L x 0.9" W (2.9 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 89.53% to 90.66% (equivalent to 21K+); weight: 4.3 grams
Provenance: private London, UK collection, ex-Rusking collection, Oxford, UK, acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s
