Hector Jara (Mexican, b. 1951). "Hombre Jaguar" serigraph on Amate bark paper, edition 43/60, 1998. A serigraph (silkscreen) on Amate bark paper entitled "Hombre Jaguar" inspired by imagery from a Maya mural painting in the Palacio de Tetitla, Teotihuacan. A man-jaguar is heading down a path marked by footprints toward a temple adorned with jaguar fur, representing one of the oldest and most revered sites in Teotihuacan, the Temple of the Jaguar. The informative Certificate of Authenticity on the verso of this piece is signed, dated, and numbered by the artist and also indicates that this print was created with 17 layers of pigment on Amate bark paper which was handmade using the same technique that was used during the Pre-Columbian era. Size of image: 12" L x 35.5" W (30.5 cm x 90.2 cm) Size of amate sheet: 16" L x 39" W (40.6 cm x 99.1 cm) Size of frame: 23.3" L x 46.4" W (59.2 cm x 117.9 cm)
The sacred city of Teotihuacan ("the place were the gods were created"), at one time the largest city in the Pre-Columbian world, is famous for its pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon) as well as the Great Compound with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (aka Temple of the Plumed Serpent) punctuating the Avenue of the Dead. In addition, there are a group of palaces, including Palacio de Tetitla, outside Teotihuacan's main area, and many of the murals decorating these palaces were discovered in the 1940s. For example, 120 walls of the Palacio de Tetitla are adorned by murals depicting such wondrous entities as Tlaloc the rain god, serpents, eagles, and jaguars.
