Native American, Pacific Northwest, Tlingit / Haida, ca. mid-20th century CE. A stunning dancing headdress frontlet made from cloth, leather, weasel pelts, wood, abalone shell, and feathers! Traditionally, chiefs wore carved wood headdress frontlets that were created to signify the rank of the wearer, the totemic animal and anthropomorphic motifs signifying clan and family affiliations. frontlet with beautiful abalone shell inlays. The wood frontlet is mounted on a red cloth cap with feathers and quills sewn vertically, crowning the top. Attached is a train / cape of deer hide covered in the pelts of many white weasels. This is an impressive ceremonial costume used in dancing rituals and worn primarily by chiefs as beautiful symbols of authority and power from the animals! Size of wood / feather frontlet: 8.5" Diameter x 18" H (21.6 cm x 45.7 cm); 38" H (96.5 cm) on included custom stand.
