Arthur Moody (Northwest Coast, Haida, 1885-1967), Skidegate, British Columbia, Canada, ca.1960s. Signed on the back. A wonderful totem hand-carved from argillite by Haida master carver Arthur Moody. The totem depicts an eagle holding a fish in its talons, a raven with the sun, and a beaver holding a branch all atop an integral plinth. An inscription on the back of the totem reads, "CARVED BY ARTHUR MOODY SKIDEGATE MISSION OV ID. B.C." Moody's family lineage is steeped in the argillite carving tradition. His step-father, Thomas Moody (c. 1877-1947) was an argillite carver, as was his son, Rufus Moody (1923-1998). Together, these three generations of a single family have made significant contributions to the argillite carving tradition. Arthur once carved a totem pole that at 59 inches (150 cm) was the tallest carved from argillite until his son Rufus surpassed this record. Size: 6.25" H (15.9 cm)
Arthur Moody was a master carver from Skidegate, British Columbia (Queen Charlotte Islands) who was well-versed in the argillite tradition. It is believed that Arthur learned carving from Robert Miller (1860-1930), who came from Tasu, Haida Gwaii. Interestingly, Arthur once carved a 48" argillite totem pole and used the proceeds to build his home in Skidegate. In addition to being a master argillite carver, Arthur was musically talented. He played the cornet and conducted local ensembles on Haida Gwaii as well as in northern British Columbia.
