Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala/Chontal, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. Hand-carved and string-cut from a gorgeous pale mottled greenstone, an abstract, stylized standing figure with a characteristically oversized head, undercut neck, straight mouth, sunken eyes with drilled pupils, schematically delineated torso with incised lines suggesting attenuated arms and waistline, and tapered legs held together. The Chontal and Mezcala artists created portable sculpture grave offerings. This example presents a blend of the dramatically abstract Mezcala stylings with the relatively more naturalistic features of the Chontal, these most visible in the contours of the facial planes. The beauty of the stone in addition to the elegant delineation of the form make for an impressive piece. Size: 3.1" W x 9" H (7.9 cm x 22.9 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
The Guerrero region of modern-day southwestern Mexico was the center of the Mezcala and Chontal stone carving traditions. While Mezcala artists are known for their abstract, geometric style, the Chontal sculptors imbued their artworks with more naturalism. Although their stonework stems from the Preclassic period, ca. 300 to 100 BCE, later Mesoamerican peoples clearly cherished Chontal portable sculptures as heirlooms. Chontal creations have been unearthed in ritual caches at Templo Mayor, the principal temple of the 15th century Aztecs of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City).
